During the summer, when we are sleeping with the windows open, I sometimes listen to the owls hooting. Often there are 2 or 3 at different distances, proclaiming their territory. At least I assume they are doing it for that reason and not just to scare the nightdarks out of small furry creatures.
I am so very jealous! Either I am not looking/listening carefully enough, or I have been unlucky...because I have never seen nor heard an owl in real life! This sounds wonderful.
Cool images. Now you can pick the Owl instead of the good or bad angel on your shoulder? Very interesting piece. I used to be a night 🦉, working at night. Seeing other creatures roaming area. Thanks for read.
I have two questions, both or either of which might be personal, but I'm curious about these things - the back and forth between Quebec and Scotland is intriguing. Is that something you've written about or plan to? I'm fascinated by how people live and where and all that.
And two, when you say you "have left all dignity at the door on my other social channels in this respect" re: self-promotion, I'm also curious about what writers do to promote their works. Obviously this has been written about everywhere ad nauseam, but I like hearing about authors I've got to know and respect and what they have to say. You serialising Cold Secrets is also an interesting story in and of itself.
Quebec-London-Scotland (yes...it's as tiring as it sounds!). So, our permanent home is in Scotland but we're in Quebec for the next year or so for my husband's job. I'm back and forth more often than usual at the moment due to a few big life reasons.
Dignity at the door (!!): haha, well, I've decided (contrary to what I've said before about perhaps giving up on TikTok) to post like no tomorrow about my book there. It actually seems to be working a little bit. I posted about my previous two titles but certainly not as much/as obviously. Crucially, I'm limiting the time I spend on these posts. They're very off-the-cuff and unedited and I'm getting just as many – if not more – views than before. I also reached out to "bookinfluencers" this time around...possibly a tactic more suited to genre fiction, but it has helped!
Okay, now things make more sense - I remember asking you about that beer in one of your camping videos and when you mentioned it was a Quebecois lager, my first thought was, wow, they sell that in Scotland? 😂
This reminds me of when I was studying at Edinburgh. I had a nationalism course and he had a job offer in Quebec focusing on nationalism, a great job, but his wife was also an academic in Scotland and had a great position and he was facing a major dilemma. This all happened near the end of our course, so I don't know what he decided.
I definitely need to try to market my book. Full stop. Not even more, just market full stop. I've done almost nothing outside of my already existing social media circle (not that big) and I only started up on Instagram in July. Now that I've just about completed my first novel (the first draft, anyway), I might try the serialisation thing like you did with Cold Secrets (and I've seen others doing) and then attempt some marketing. I really...don't like it (marketing, not Cold Secrets, of course 🤣 - I'm on chapter 15).
An owl is significant in the Star Wars story of Ahsoka as well. We are fortunate in having a great horned owl who visits our neighborhood on occasion according to the Merlin app (the Shazam of ornithology), never seen though.

Then you are in for a treat!
I love Owls. I am a knight of the Ordo Aureum Noctuae, order of the golden owl. They are truly outstanding beings.
You know, I've never been lukcy enough to see one in real life! However, like you, I love them.
Indeed. Majestic silent hunters in the night. They exude wisdom somehow. Outstanding.
That's beautiful! Thank you.

Lovely, as always.

I love Merlin...that's wonderful! I hope you see it one day/night!!
